On Saturday April 16th, 2016, Ecuador and Japan were hit with powerful earthquakes and multiple aftershocks. A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck northern Ecuador on Saturday April 16th resulting in at least 272 people killed and 2,527 people injured, according to the government of Ecuador. A magnitude 6.2 quake struck Japan on Thursday April 14th, followed by a magnitude 7.3 quake on Saturday April 16th. More than 40 people have been confirmed dead and 1,100 injured in Japan. Through the Ecuador and Japan Earthquake Relief Fund, we show our solidarity and support for the communities affected in both Japan and Ecuador.

The W.H.O. has declared COVID-19 a pandemic and public health emergency of international concern. Bright Funds Foundation has established the 2020 Coronavirus Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Fund. According to the Center for Disaster Philanthropy, supporting Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) are key to limiting the spread of any infection, especially those that are spread by close contact. Increasing access to WASH resources will help limit the spread of coronavirus and other infections. Supporting areas with poor access to medical healthcare means providing access to clean water for handwashing and other vital hygiene practices. This will help limit the spread of all viruses and other infections. India has seen a record number of daily cases and lives lost to Covid-19, more than any country to date. This devastating second wave is exacerbated by the lack of adequate access to healthcare such as oxygen solutions, healthcare workers, and other resources. Here, DoorDash employees and community members can donate to the India Covid-19 Community Support Fund. Donations will be split among three US-based nonprofits supporting the response in India through both short-term emergency relief and long-term recovery. DoorDash leaders Gokul Rajaram, Prabir Adarkar and Rajat Shroff have seeded this fund with initial donations. Our hearts go out to the Indian community.

While Delhi has been hit the hardest, the virus has rapidly traveled to smaller cities and towns that are struggling. The situation in India is devastating, and it poses a global risk -- experts warn that the more the virus spreads, the more chances it has to mutate and create variants that could eventually resist current vaccines in circulation, threatening to undermine other countries' progress in containing the pandemic. On Tuesday, August 4 two explosions at the port of Beirut tore through its city center, decimating buildings, upending cars, and killing people. Fueled by nearly 3,000 tons of ammonium nitrate, the impact was felt up to 149 miles away on the island of Cyprus. More than 150 people have died already, with hundreds missing and thousands more injured. It is estimated that 300,000+ people will be homeless or displaced due to damaged homes. Lebanon has already been heavily impacted by COVID-19 and an economic crisis that has forced tens of thousands into poverty; this latest explosion only exacerbates those prior struggles. On June 22nd, 2022 a powerful earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan. That afternoon, the toll had already reached at least 1,000 casualties and more than 1,500 more injured. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the 5.9-magnitude earthquake occurred around 1:30 a.m. local time. It was felt across most of the country, and because it took place near the border of Pakistan, the country was also affected. We don't yet know the full magnitude of the disaster, but these organizations are sharing their work and receiving donations so that you can help those affected.

Beyond the inherent value of promoting and protecting the equal rights of everyone around the world, I believe investing in women's economic and social empowerment is the best way to improve a society's overall wellbeing.

In early August several wildfires broke out across the island of Maui, Hawaii. This has led to the tragic death of over 100 people, the displacement of at least 11,000 people and over $5.5 billion USD of damage to the island. The eastern Indonesian island of Sulawesi was hit with a 7.5-magnitude earthquake and a subsequent tsunami that hurled water as high as 20 feet over the city of Palu. Officials said the death toll has reached 2113 and there's still more than 1300 people missing. Since the disasters, stores have been looted, residents have gone hungry and there have been mass jail breaks. Some nonprofit organizations and charities have mobilized to bring relief to the island. If you want to help those affected by the earthquake and tsunami, here is some guidance, and a list of some of the organizations involved in recovery efforts, as per the New York Times.

Helping fight the humanitarian crisis in India. India, which hosts 1/6th of the global population, has seen a record number of daily cases and lives lost to Covid-19. It has been reporting 400k new cases every day with more than 3,500 deaths per day in this second wave, figures that are likely being under reported. With 2.4M+ active cases and 180K+ deaths reported as of late April, the COVID resurgence in India has stretched existing medical infrastructure to the breaking point with a shortage of health workers and hospital running out of beds, oxygen supplies, ventilators and anti-viral drugs. The employees of Rabobank and community can donate to the disaster response campaign to benefit responding nonprofits: UNICEF, CARE, Direct Relief, American India Foundation and Path. Heavy monsoon rains and flash flooding have devastated the communities of Pakistan since June of 2022, and the flooding is now categorized as a humanitarian crisis. An estimated 33 million people have been affected, with more than 1,000 reported deaths and more than 1,500 reported injuries. Maximum relief efforts are currently underway, but more relief and aid is needed as the country is expected to continue to experience heavy rains. The following organizations are currently making efforts to provide relief to those impacted by these catastrophic and unprecedented weather patterns.

In addition, more than 200,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed along with roads and other critical infrastructure. 108,000 hectares of farmland have been damaged raising concerns about Nigeria’s food supply. More flooding is expected in the coming month. Cisco Crisis Response is in contact with partners in the area to evaluate the needs for emergency communications. On 6 February 2023, a powerful M7.8 earthquake struck Türkiye's Gaziantep province near the Syrian border, killing thousands of people and injuring thousands more in Turkey and Syria. There have been multiple strong aftershocks, felt as far away as Lebanon, Cyprus, Iraq and Egypt. One of the strongest quakes to hit the region in more than 100 years, it has caused extensive damage of homes, businesses and infrastructure; the death toll is expected to rise as search and rescue operations continue. Türkiye has declared a state of emergency and appealed for international assistance. Cisco Foundation has launched a Türkiye and Syria Earthquake disaster campaign which will support Americares, CARE, International Medical Corps, International Rescue Committee, Islamic Relief USA, Mercy Corps, and World Central Kitchen. A powerful and devastating 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Morocco on Friday, September 8, 2023, marking itself as the deadliest earthquake to hit the country in 60 years and the strongest earthquake Morocco has experienced in more than a century. The death toll continues to rise into the thousands, with thousands more injured. Homes, businesses and infrastructure have been destroyed, and search-and-rescue efforts are currently underway. The following organizations are providing relief to those impacted by the earthquake by providing food, water, shelter, medical care, and supplies, among other critical resources. Your donation to this Fund will help support these organizations' shared mission of providing immediate relief to survivors while assessing long-term recovery needs. The Rohingya population, a mostly Muslim ethnic minority from Myanmar's Rakhine state, have been systematically persecuted and attacked. Since August, over 615,000 Rohingya refugees have fled Myanmar for Bangladesh. In response to this humanitarian crisis, we established the Rohingya Refugee Relief Fund to support nonprofit organizations providing critical emergency aid like shelter materials, clean water, health clinics, and support for survivors of gender-based violence.

On World Humanitarian Day August 19, the world commemorates humanitarian workers killed and injured in the course of their work, and we honour all aid and health workers who continue, despite the odds, to provide life-saving support and protection to people most in need. This year World Humanitarian Day comes as the world continues to fight the COVID-19 pandemic over recent months. Aid workers are overcoming unprecedented access hurdles to assist people in humanitarian crises in 54 countries, as well as in a further nine countries which have been catapulted into humanitarian need by the COVID-19 pandemic. This day was designated in memory of the 19 August 2003 bomb attack on the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq, killing 22 people, including the chief humanitarian in Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello. A powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.8 struck Morocco, toppling buildings in mountainous villages and ancient cities not built to withstand such force. More than 2,000 people were killed, and the toll was expected to rise as rescuers struggle to reach hard-hit remote areas.

A devastating 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Morocco on Friday, September 8, 2023. The earthquake has killed more than 2,900 people and injured many thousands more. It is the strongest earthquake Morocco has experienced in more than a century. The following organizations are providing relief to those impacted by the earthquake by providing food, medical care, and other critical resources. World Humanitarian Day, recognized each year on August 19th, honors humanitarian aid workers for their bravery and sacrifice when providing relief to those in need. Humanitarian relief workers are often exposed to dangerous environments and harsh conditions when providing relief in an effort to ensure the wellness of our world's most vulnerable and reducing suffering, putting their own safety at risk to do so. On May 3rd Cyclone Fani, the strongest storm to hit India in 20 years, made landfall in eastern India. The storm has impacted over 1.2 million people in India who were evacuated from low-lying areas. We invite you to join us in supporting the Cyclone Fani Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund. Through a single donation to the Fund, you can help provide short-term and long-term response and recovery to multiple organization initiatives. Our Fund approach is informed by expert and local recommendations, based on up to date information from disaster philanthropy and nongovernmental organization networks. The Fund's strategy is similarly dynamic and responsive: as information on local communities needs becomes available, we will update the organizations in this Fund, directing donations towards specific organizations doing work in the areas most affected. We have initially selected organizations that are on the ground assisting with immediate relief needs, including rescue efforts, medical assistance, and providing access to clean water, food and shelter. Devastating floods from Storm Daniel have left at least 5,000 people dead and around 10,000 more missing in Libya. The United Nations’ International Organization for Migration (IOM) says that more than 30,000 people have also been displaced. Heavy rains from the storm caused two dams in the northern city of Derna to burst, washing away homes, neighborhoods and flooding streets. The debris and rubble left in the flood’s wake have made it difficult for rescue teams to access the area.
